Update #6: Grand Opening Annoucement

Filed under: Construction — vineyardwinebar @ 6:49 pm

We’re almost there!!!

WOW!!! What a journey! For those of you that have been following us from the beginning, I’m very happy to announce that we are almost there.

The long awaited Vineyard Wine Bar is only days away from opening its doors.

The build out is now complete and the place looks great, (at least that is what everyone tells us as they peak their heads in the door and look around). We think you’ll be pleased with what we’ve done.

We’re now in the finishing completion stages.

The kitchen is finished.
The bar is finished.
The painting is finished.
The trim work is finished.
The hardwood floors are down in the bar.
The carpet is down in the lounge.
We’ve moved the tables and chairs and bar stools into the bar, and the couches, love seat, chairs, tables and lamps into the lounge.
The fireplace is on… the flat screen TV is on and we’re starting to hang pictures and prints on the walls.

The signs are in the windows, and there are trees in logo-color-matching pots out front.

We’ve passed our final Electrical Inspection, our final Plumbing Inspection, our final Fire Inspection, Health Inspection, and received our Use and Occupancy permit.

This past Wednesday afternoon we were granted final Liquor License approval and will pick up our liquor license this afternoon.

We’ve been busy!!!!!

It’s been 18 to 19 hour days for the past two weeks, but we are so excited with the results and can’t wait to share them with you.

We finalized our Opening Menu yesterday, and will have the Wine Program finished by this weekend. We’re going to open with 67 wines available By-The-Glass, and 226 wines available By-The-Bottle. We will also have 232 wines available for you to purchase and take home, with discounts on case purchases.

Our many wine and food purveyors are being notified today, orders are being placed, and the trucks filled with wine and food will start heading toward our doors early next week.

And now the exciting news……

Grand opening week will start on Monday, October 19th.

So start counting down…… 9 days to go to opening.

Make your reservations by calling us at 443-502-2551.

We’re looking forward to seeing you….. and we believe you will be very pleased.

It’s been a long journey, but “The Destination for Wine Lovers”, is just a short distance away.

We thank you all for your support and encouragement.

Update #5: Only weeks away from our grand opening!

Filed under: Construction — vineyardwinebar @ 10:18 pm

As we enter the finishing build out on The Vineyard Wine Bar one thing can be said for certain….. the days are long…. and they all run together too!

We’ve been averaging 15 hour days and we’ve been working Saturday and Sunday getting the wine bar ready… that’s the main reason you haven’t heard from me for a couple weeks…. but boy do I have a lot to talk about in this update. So hold on to your seats cause here we go with the latest………..

Stef  Roman, our electrician has been on the job for just about 6 weeks now running new electric wire, (it’s got to be about 3 to 4 miles of wire at this point), through the ceilings, and floors, and walls setting up the ceiling fans, track lighting, dimmers, kitchen and bar usage….. and he’s taken such an “ownership” in the wine bar that not only has his electrical experience been helpful…. But his ideas have been equal to that of a restaurant designer. The lighting is looking good, and Stef has added some nice touches.

Our painter, Kim Little has finished restoration to the original, tin ceiling in the bar area and accented it with metallic paint that makes the room “Pop”. She’s also “sponged” the bar walls with the same paint as the ceiling which really marries the ceiling with the walls. In the lounge she’s blended burgundy walls with a sandstone “faux” fireplace wall that has had visitors tapping it to see if it’s real block. We think the lounge is going to be a popular place to “park” for the evening and enjoy wine and tapas.

Our Quarry was delivered in the pouring rain last Friday and it took the quarry mechanics 6 and a half hours to position the 20 foot slab on the bar and install the 24 foot ledge against the wall. WOW, does it look awesome, and a few local “visitors” have commented about the dramatic change. The place is really starting to look comfortable.

Our bar stools, high top tables, and dining tables arrived at 7:00 am yesterday morning and they are now stacked in the lounge area awaiting their permanent place in the wine bar area.

We started moving out the kitchen equipment from our garages and basements over the weekend and there is finally room to move around again…. Although the kitchen and lounge in the wine bar is now very crowded!!!

We picked up our wine racks and they are ready to be assembled and positioned as soon as the carpet is laid.

We’ve hired the first of our “support team” Gina, Cathy, and Natisha will be starting their training next Thursday, and we are looking for 2 to 3 addition “support staff” to round out the service team.

…… AND….. speaking of “support team”…… we are very pleased to announce that after a long, extensive search, and numerous interviews, we have finally found our Chef……… in Cincinnati, Ohio, of all places! Chef Gabriel Caruthers is moving his family from Cincinnati this weekend and relocating to nearby Conowingo. Chef Gabriel has some very creative ideas and should WOW you with his small plate creations. We are very excited to have him join The Vineyard Wine Bar family. He starts next Monday, September 21st and has a full agenda as we get him acclimated.

Today, our finishing crew started building out the back bar shelving, and will start the finishing touches to the bar face, molding, window trim, base trim, and other “finishing” treatments. (We finished the bar itself this past weekend complete with quarry tile, FRP, and other necessities and requirements.)

Early next week the hardwood flooring should go in bar area, followed by carpet in the lounge, and then the finishing touches all around.

There is still a lot of detail work to do, but we have a plan of attack, and an execution strategy.

It’s rewarding each time a local resident pokes their head in to see the progress. It’s usually followed by a “Wow”, or a “Whoa”, or “I never thought I’d see the place look this good”, or “I can’t wait for you to open… the place looks remarkable”, or some other verbal encouragement. That really helps make the long hard days and nights worthwhile.

So…. aside from the visual changes to the wine bar and lounge, in our spare time we have been attending to the many dozens of other details that need research and decisions like: negotiating terms for credit card purchases, determining the right computer system, alarm system, WiFi, cable and phone service, and determining the correct mix of kitchen equipment, tax stuff, accountant stuff, wine decisions, food decisions, plates, silverware etc., etc., etc…. as I said earlier, the days are long and they all run together.

…..but I’ve got to tell you….. we wouldn’t have it any other way because it’s all going to be worth it, for you, and for us, when we open.

Speaking of opening….. our new targeted date for opening is mid October. We have inspections to get through after the finishing work, and a final hearing for our liquor license, but if all goes well, (Please let all go well), we should have our “soft” opening the 2nd week in October and go “live” to the public the mid-part of the 3rd week. Wish us well as we enter the final build out, the countdown to opening day….. and stay tuned as we get you the final updates, the Grand Opening Celebration Date, and the festivities that will surround “The Destination for Wine Lovers.”

Hope to see you soon at The Vineyard Wine Bar.

Update #4: The Progress Continues

Filed under: Construction — vineyardwinebar @ 3:07 pm

billboardWow, the days are flying by but we’re really making progress. Here’s what’s new…..

As our electricians and carpenters, and tile layers, and sheet rockers, and wire runners, and bar builders have been busy at The Vineyard Wine Bar over the past few weeks, we have been equally busy meeting with food purveyors and wine distributors, tasting and evaluating, and determining what wines, and what foods are worthy of being on the wine list and the tasting menu. It’s been exhausting….. but we’re making great progress, and we’re starting to finalize the menu. We are going to have a selection of pate and cheeses that no one in the area has, combined with a really nice selection of flat breads, and salads, and Antipasti, and….. and ….. and…. Wow, we’re getting really excited about the menu we’re going to be offering. We’ve been very demanding on the quality of the foods so we’ve been keeping our prospective purveyors busy showing us the best of what they have to offer.

We’ve also been looking at plates…. Many different sizes and shapes and configurations of plates…. And silverware, I never realized that there are so many different patterns of silverware out there.

After looking at, and evaluating many different glassware companies, we’ve come to a decision as to what crystal wine glasses we’re going to be using. They are of great quality and we’re thinking about offering them for sale in our retail department for anyone interested. They really accentuate the flavors of the wines.

We’re also going into the final phase of building out the bar and painting the bar and lounge areas. The electrician is almost finished and the painter should be finished by next Friday. The custom Granite bar top will be installed next Friday also. The light fixtures are getting hung and the place is starting to take shape.

The bar stools and tables will arrive in two weeks, and by the middle of next week we’ll start emptying out our garages, and living rooms, and dining rooms, and basements and start moving furniture down to the lounge.

It’s hard to believe that summer is over. I believe it set a new speed record this year. We’re behind schedule, and we’ve missed our initial opening date, but we’re not going to open until we feel the place is the way we want it, and the wine and food choices are up to our, (demanding), standards.

We’re planning an early October opening so we’ll continue to keep you informed as finalize the build out and get ready to open our doors.

Update #3: The Vineyard Wine Bar – Full Steam Ahead

Filed under: Construction — Tags: — vineyardwinebar @ 7:36 am

july 6th 2009 012Well it’s been very hectic at The Vineyard Wine Bar since I wrote last, and I appoligize for taking so long in getting you an update.

As you recall from my last update, we had just finished putting in all new plumbing throughout, and the electricians were about to start their portion of the build out. Well…… just as we thought…. the entire electric system had to be replaced… not a single inch of old electric could be used. It took more time than we expected with electricians on the job for the past, almost, three weeks.
july 6th 2009 007

The electric was much more involved than the plumbing. The plumbing, as you can imagine, was mostly in the floor, where as the electricity replacement was in the floors, the walls, and the ceilings. There were, (in some cases still are), holes everywhere where new wire had to be fished through walls, and beams and joists, but Tony and Mike, (the 2 very capable dry wall experts), are doing a great job of patching everything up and making it new again, and in a couple days everything will look great!

We passed electric inspection on Thursday of last week…. Yea!!! (Sorry I’ve been so busy that I haven’t had time to drop you all an update until now)….. and so now we move on to electrical “finish work”.

july 6th 2009 001

What we accomplished this past week was:

  • The bathroom walls and ceilings are now in.
  • Sub floors have been put in.
  • Tile has been laid, (we chose a really nice “slate” look with swirls of gray, olive and burgundy combined with a light gray grout. The bathrooms are going to compliment the colors throughout the lounge and bar area very nicely, and are going to be comfortable.
  • The toilets and sinks are now in and we have running water for the first time.
  • The prep room has been outfitted with new walls, sub-floor and ceiling, and the kitchen is being worked on.
  • The walls were run for our office and the rest room divider was put up.
  • The Fireplace is now in place with the venting being run.
  • The new furnace and central air is now fully in place, and operative.

The painter starts on the tin ceiling this Wednesday and then the walls in the lounge and wine bar will follow next week.

We started building the new bar frame on Thursday, and picked out the furniture grade wood that will become the face of the bar. We also picked out the cabinets for the back bar and they will be in place by the end of this week…. then our furniture maker will start the custom shelving build out.

The final measurement for the custom Granite bar top was done on Friday morning and the 20 foot slab will be made, polished and finished in 2 weeks.

We’ve had numerous meetings with our food purveyors and started finalizing the menu choices, and we’ve also met with wine distributors and started the long and difficult task, of finding the BEST wines available, from the best wine growing regions of the world, at the best prices.

july 6th 2009 003

As we move further into this week, and for the next couple weeks…. along with finishing the front bar build out, placements of the cabinets, building of the back bar shelving, painting of the ceilings and walls…. We will also install the bar floor, install the floor tile in the kitchen and prep rooms, install a new hardwood floor in the bar area, and carpet in the lounge area, finish the rest rooms, and office, hang lighting fixtures, and continue to build out the kitchen, along with starting to empty out our garages and basements by bringing furniture and equipment that we’ve been storing there.

In our spare time we’re also working on finalizing the glassware, plates, silverware, napkins….. Wow, the list just goes on and on.

The next few weeks will consist of long, hard days, but the place is starting to look like a wine bar and we’re starting to see rewarding results from all our hard work.

As you probably know by now, we are off schedule and won’t be making our target of a Labor Day weekend opening….. but we can see the light at the end of the tunnel and feel we’re not too far off from opening.

Thanks for being a part of the progress, for all the well wishes, and for all the support we’ve been getting from all of you.

Update #2: The Vineyard Wine Bar Starts Taking Shape

June 2009 006

Setting up a wine bar in a building built in 1838 means that there is going to be a few things that need updating! (Ya think!) For the past week and a half we have had 4 to 6 plumbers at the wine bar every day. It appears that the plumbing hasn’t been updated, or repaired, since, like, the 1920’s…… so you can’t even begin to imagine what they discovered when they started ripping out floors to update! They couldn’t use a single inch of the old plumbing in the entire building, so for the past, almost-two-weeks they have been laying all new hot and cold lines, sewer lines, vent lines, drains, sink drains, you name it, throughout the bar area, the kitchen area, the prep room area, and both rest rooms. There must be miles of piping running through the floors in the place….. (seriously, there must be a couple football fields of piping.)

Anyway, today the plumbing inspector was there and looked, (in detail), at all the work that’s been done over the past two weeks by these guys and gave us the thumbs up…… WE PASSED INSPECTION! Yea!!!
June 2009 020
So the plumbing is roughed in, the new HVAC ducts are in and drywalled, and the electrician was given the green light to start his portion of the job. (We’re expecting the electric is going to be in the same condition as the plumbing so we’re looking at a week and a half to two weeks for him to complete his job.)
We purchased, and picked up, our gas fireplace, (for those nights when you want to sit in our couches, or love seats, in front of the fireplace), and the gas lines have been run. Cable, computer lines, (WIFI), and phone lines have been run, and we’ve picked out the flooring. It’s moving a little slower than we’d like….. but it’s moving steady and we’re still shooting for an early September opening.

PS….. did you know that our historic town missed being the capital of the United States by one (1) vote? Yep.. Washington DC beat out Havre de Grace as the capital of the USA but just one vote!
Here are some more pictures of our progress!

Update #1: Introducing The Vineyard Wine Bar…Coming Soon!

Filed under: Construction — Tags: — vineyardwinebar @ 2:29 pm
vineyard-wine-bar-logo
What a difference a week makes. If you had stopped in to see us at The Vineyard Wine Bar last Monday…. than stopped again this past Monday, you wouldn’t believe you were in the same place. The changes are dramatic!
We started full demo of the building last Monday. Old fluorescent light fixtures were torn out…. walls came down… floors came up…. ceilings came down…. freezers and refrigerators and shelving and sinks and cabinets came out… old electric fixtures came out… radiators and old plumbing was torn out… at the conclusion we removed 2-tractor-trailer sized dumpsters full of *%$@, and we now have the 3rd tractor-trailer sized dumpster in place.
As I write this today new sheet rock is up….. new walls are up….. ceilings are in….. the plumber is on the property starting to install all new plumbing throughout….. the HVAC guy’s are on the property installing a new furnace, running new ducts throughout and new air conditioning…. and there are a total of 7 contractors doing work to help get us operational.
Lot’s of exciting stuff for us.
The days are long but the energy is starting to build.
PS….. did you know that our building was build in 1838? It’s a historic place in town. (More to come on the colorful history of our building.)
